4 Ways to Prep for Your Summer Family Photo Session

Tips for Summer Family Photos - Nicole Guido - Fayetteville NC Photographer

Schooooool’s out for summer. Schooooool’s out foreva. C’mon, you knowww you started singing that song with me.

Longer days, warmer weather, no homework, more playtime = the perfect time to plan on getting some updated family photos. Have you booked your session yet? Whether you’re already in the planning stages with your photog or you’re thinking about booking, I wanted to share 4 tips for summer family photos. Y’all these are tried and true and they’re tips I like to tell alllll of my summer clients before their session date, and I hope you’ll find it helpful too!

Wear sunscreen

It’s summertime, which means you’re likely spending a lot of time at the beach or pool! Can I join you…? In all seriousness, if you’re hanging out outside before your session, be sure to slather up in sunscreen! Tan, don’t burn!

Time of day

Friends, when you plan a photo session with your photographer, the start time is not a coincidence. It’s a carefully crafted plan to get you the best light for your session so that you get the most beautiful final photos. Gimme all the golden hours for my lifestyle sessions, because the beautiful warm hues just scream summer, nostalgia, warmth, and connection. For that reason, I like to start my summer lifestyle sessions about an hour before the sun sets below the horizon.

Here’s the important thing to keep in mind: during the summer, the sun sets later, which sometimes conflicts with early bedtimes for littles. I always recommend to my clients that we shoot close to sunset, but I also always honor their family values and routines by giving them the option to choose a more convenient time of day in case pushing bedtime isn’t an option. Other options include: early morning or mid-day in-home, where the afternoon light won’t be quite as harsh.

What to wear

I don’t know about where you live, but this North Carolina heat is NO joke. I recommend to all of my clients that they dress in light colored clothing and light fabrics. It gets humid here, and nothing ruins the joy of your session faster than feeling hot and sweaty. I want you comfortable so you’re able to be present and have fun! Need some inspiration? Think outside the box

Want to document summer but prefer to get real? Not all summer sessions have to take place in a beautiful spot in glow-y golden light. Your summer is made up tons of fun moments and activities, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box for your session! Love to spend the day at the beach? Maybe you want to take the kids to the water park but you want to go on the rides too and not worry about who’s taking the photos? Maybe your family likes to head to the baseball field and play a little catch. Or maybe you’re like us and enjoy taking a family walk after dinner. Whatever your summer looks like, it’s worth documenting! And I can help!

I hope you found these tips for summer family photos useful! If you haven’t booked your summer session yet, what’s holding you back? I still have availability for this summer and would love to help you create your visual legacy!
