Up until three years ago, this born and raised California girl never knew what a REAL fall was like. I mean for 23 years, I had FOMO, before FOMO was even a real thing. And when I moved to Hawaii, well I basically moved from one sunshiney state to another, where fall didn’t exist. But fast forward to October 2015. When we found out we were moving to Virginia, “fall in Virginia” became my top searched phrase on Google. I was ready to give this whole four seasons thing a try.
One thing I’ve come to really love about fall in Richmond is watching the leaves change from green to yellow to red. It’s basically a color explosion. It’s beautiful and it really makes my photographer heart burst. If you’re thinkin’ about planning family photos this fall, or just want to explore some new places, check out these locations around the Richmond area.
Pocahontas State Park
It’s like having the mountains close to home. Think endless trails, fields to frolic, lakes to row on, all the outdoorsy things. I’ve had many sessions there and it truly is one of my favorite places to suggest because there’s a backdrop for everyone.
Here’s what you need to know: There’s a $7 parking fee on the weekend.
You really can’t go wrong with Belle Isle. Think fields galore right on the iconic James River. I’ve really come to love this little spot. It can get busy, but sunset at the park is golden and the view of Downtown Richmond from the pedestrian bridge is one for the books. Bonus: It’s free, fun, and there’s no permit fee!
Acres of beautiful gardens in the heart of Richmond and architectural details to boot. It hasn’t been very crowded anytime I’ve been there, making it a fun, but intimate place to have a session. Fun fact: I shot my very first session in Richmond at Maymont!
Here’s what you need to know: Maymont charges a $30 permit fee to have a session on their grounds. Sessions generally must take place weeknights.
If you’re looking for another iconic James River spot, Pony Pasture is the place. I haven’t taken any sessions there yet, but would absolutely love to!
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is the perfect spot for those who don’t necessarily like to hang out in nature. It’s located in the museum district in Richmond and is a really unique place to check out. Think modern art, brick, streets to walk, all the feels of city living, without too much hustle and bustle.
Say what? I’m serious, my friend! Have you ever considered having a session at your house? Here’s what I love about in-home sessions:
- No packing the kids up and hustling to be at your location on time.
- You’re comfortable in your home and so are your kids. You’ve got everything you could possibly need within reach.
- The house is the center of your life right now, whether you realize it or not. It’s your hub. What better way to remember this house than to document the life you live in it.
Keep in mind that just because it’s at-home, doesn’t mean it has to be IN-home. We did this sweet family’s photos in their gorgeous backyard. Something to consider!
My friend, if you are planning a session in the RVA area, I hope that you find this helpful! Richmond is a really unique city that offers a backdrop for everyone! And if you haven’t scheduled your family photos for this fall yet, email me TODAY so we can get you on my calendar! I can’t wait to hang out with you!
